Looking Elsewhere
Here are a selection of links that are both commonly used and others that are not so. Wading through a web of information can be as daunting as facing the old filing cabinets stuffed full of records and information, in no particular order or fashion.
As with any information, some sites are reliable and some not so reliable. Thus, always collaborate any evidence wherever possible. You might find that hidden nugget, but be wary as another site may have obtained it from the same (unreliable) source, thus the dispertion of misinformation begins, to the hinderance of the diligent researcher. Feel free to send in any suggestions of links that could be used on this site In fact, any suggestions to improve any aspect of this site is warmly welcome. Just remember, however, that when you navigate away from oursutherlands.com to use your back button at the top of your page to come back from where-ever you have been.
Reliability
Governments and their agencies offer the most reliable sources of information. Many are pay-per-view, but it is worth that few Pounds which repays itself with easily accessible records normally displayed on-screen. It is almost acceptable, even rewarding, when a fact has been deliberately misinformed, for instance a deliberate untruth of a date of birth or maritial status.
At the other end of the scale, amatuer genealogist like ourselves abound with enthusiasm may host a site of inaccuracies which lead you merrily up the wrong path. Once again, validate any information gleamed from them. It's often more worthy being able to contact the contributor direct, rather than relying on his/her information on their site which may also be out of date. The sharing of information festers more information ... and, of course, raises more questions to be answered.
