Our Sutherlands

They worked the hardest land on the furthest extremes of the northern isles. From that they scraped an existence and developed a strength that would see them move to mainland Scotland and then on to the four corners of the globe.

This site is about a family who endured Orkney and the little that it's soils offered, battled in the fields of Flanders and flourish in today's global village.

They were our Sutherlands.

We are many now and this is the place where we can all come together again. A place to recollect and tell the stories of how and where we are today. Let us show how the seeds of our common ancestors have sprouted.

Where will those of generations to come be in the next century or two? Did they ever wonder that while they were scrounging off the land and from the seas of Orkney?

We are our Sutherlands.

For the Family Historian

Within these pages lies the results gained through many years of research, tracing a Sutherland family history, whose roots stem from the Orkney Islands, Scotland. Our mission is, not only to tell the story of our family, but also to encourage and assist others who are also on the journey back to their ancestry. Genealogy has thrived on the ethos of sharing information for years, and even more so today through the use of the internet.

Hopefully, you will be able to further your own research here, or even to contribute to oursutherlands itself. You may be one of our Sutherlands, for which we hope you have been able to learn much about our ancestry, who we were and why we are who we are today.

The web site has been designed for ease of use, for information at the click of the mouse. The main sections are listed below, with a brief detail of what they contain.

Our Ancestors A page per person view of Our Sutherlands. Each individual is detailed, where possible, on their page with a possible link to further information. Each page has the relevant link to their parents, their siblings and also to their children at the top left of that page. This allows for easy navigation to that individuals' family member.

Research Some tips and hints for the family history researcher. Links to other sites which offer the genealogist further opportunities to enhance their research. Most suggestions are for Scottish research as well as ideas for tracing those who have left Scotland. Any suggestions of other websites with relevant information will be gladly received.

BMD Records An ever expanding section referring to the Birth, Marriage and Death entries from Walls and Flotta, Orkney. These records are available elsewhere but special importance is place on the Sutherland named individuals. Some are our Sutherlands and most are not, but a good source for other surname information from the southern tip of Hoy, Orkney.

Census Records A selection of transcribed census entries of Sutherland individuals featured within Our Ancestors. Mainly Sutherlands, but other surnames are also found here. Those referred to consist of the 1851 census onwards, in Orkney through to Caithness and then Sutherland, all scotland, in 1901.

Osmondwall Cemetery A small selection of photographs of headstones found in Osmondwall Cemetery. In its early stages, this section intends to have images of most graves found in this historic graveyard. Osmondwall is the resting place of many of Our Sutherlands and other families from in or around Longhope, South Walls, Orkney.

Forum The opportunity for others researching their Walls and Flotta heritage and to share information or ask for assistance with other like minded people. The oursutherlands forum is the modern day tryst bringing together the desendants of not only Orkney families, but from Scotland as a whole. Please feel free to have a look, and even post suggestions on how to improve oursutherlands.com.
